Comics++ 1.4.8.0 (and previous crash hot fixes) Release Notes

edit 12/09/2017
Release Version 1.4.8.0
All reports related to startup crashes, rendering crashes, and discoloration should be address as of 1.4.7.0. This release fixes some alternate bugs we found plus some small quality of life improvements:
- Added folder thumbnails
*Please note that only works if the folder thumbnail has been cached through the Windows Explorer, NOT Comics++. The reason is because thumbnail caching is an extremely slow and expensive process, which goes against the lightweight philosophy of Comics++. If you want thumbnails for your folders you can cache them through Windows Explorer and the app will subsequently get them as well.
- Added file drag and drop to open
- Fixed bad rendering of images with low bit rates
- Fixed crashing when certain corrupt images are loaded
- Fixed minor cosmetic issues with canvas profile manager

edit 12/2/2017
Hot Fix 1.4.7.0
- Fixed crashing when border removal is turned on for certain images
- Fixed crashing when image with certain exotic header info are loaded; may fix discoloration issue
Since the last build there are no more crashing on reinstall reports. Yay! This build focuses on crashing and rendering issues due to OpenCV rendering. Please continue to report further crashes.

edit 11/25/2017
Hot Fix 1.4.6.0
- Fixed crashing when the system does not have any Speech languages
This is what we believe is the last crash that is related to crashing on initialization. We will continue to pump out weekly releases (or quicker) until crashing is fixed on initialization. Please continue to report further crashes.

edit 11/22/2017
Hot Fix 1.4.5.0
Some are still reporting crash on launch, including reinstall. The suspect is now Microsoft's settings system is bugged, as the app should not be able to pass certification if crashing on launch. We changed this version to hard reset all settings if there is ANY failure during initialization process. Please continue to report further crashes. Thanks you!

edit 11/18/2017
Hot Fix 1.4.4.0
- Fixed crashing when files are opened externally (should address crashing issue for those who don't use the in-app file browser)
- Fixed crashing for out of range next/prev book voice control
- Fixed sort by name ordering problem in file browser

edit 11/11/2017
Hot Fix 1.4.3.0
- Fixed border removal crashing on blank pages
- Fixed sort order in archives that uses Unicode in file names (ANOTHER MICROSOFT BUG, we had to put in a workaround)

edit 11/4/2017
Hot Fix 1.4.2.0
- Due to the new settings infrastructure some users may experience crashes when launching the app. This can be caused by upgrading from a very old version of Comics++ or due to corrupt settings which was managed by Windows. This hot fix tries reset all settings in case the upgrade fails. Reinstalling the app should also fix crashing on startup.
- Fixed auto downsize not working due to using new image renderer

If you experience any other issues please let us know first!

----

Windows store looks more dead than we are! We bring you another Comics++ release with the long request border removal. For the geeks out there we now use OpenCV for image processing, which means we can have far more advanced image processing beyond border removal power at our disposal. We might just do something crazy with it . This version also includes voice control so that you don't have to tap your mouse or keyboard with your greasy hands. Lastly, we've separated canvas settings into its own section and added canvas profiles so you can customize your canvas settings per book. For example you could have a profile for landscape/portrait, manga, comics, night/day mode etc. They also bind to book so you never have to set the settings your self per book again!

On a sad note, we are now dropping Windows 8/8.1 version because the user base is too tiny and supporting new canvas features for that is no longer worthwhile. 1.3.1.0 will be the last version on Windows 8.

Comics++ 1.4.0.0 Release Notes:
New Features
- Border removal
Auto - let Comics++ determine what's best
Aggressive, Very aggressive - cuts more into the frame than normal
- Voice control
Control page navigation with your voice!
- Canvas profiles
Canvas settings now separated from main settings
Canvas profiles binds to the book
- Settings import and export
Export saves 3 separate ini files: global settings, canvas settings (per profile), book settings (per book)
Note that per book will not work if file paths are changed

General Fixes and Updates
- New backend settings system; your existing settings will be upgraded to the new system
- Fixed most recently read ordering
- Turning off auto downsize no longer needs to reopen the book
- Fixed crash warning poping up twice
- New partial french translation by rpeyron

Another update coming soon! This update focuses on two features:

- Border removal
- Voice controls

Border removal is a feature requested by many since the inception of Comics++. It is finally here! The addition of this feature also paved the way for more advance image processing and AI related features for the future, so more to be announced soon!

Voice control is more of a feature that I wanted personally. Have you ever ate at your desk while reading a comic or manga, and every time you have to flip a page you have to put your food down and hit the keyboard or mouse with that greasy finger of yours over and over again? Not only will you not enjoy your food, your keyboard and mouse are now all screwed up. Well now you can just speak to Comics++ with your mouth full of food to ask it to go to next page!

edit: Pushed date back by 2 weeks. This release will include a new settings infrastructure which will support per book canvas settings and importable/exportable setting profiles.

edit2: Mostly finished just need to check a few things. Hopefully sometime in October.

File Browser Additions
- New* Favorites section (add to favorite unlimited number of books!)
Note that favorites are tracked by the root folder you picked. In order to make unlimited number of favorites it must be tracked by the base folder. This is an unfortunate limiation of the Windows UWP apps.
- New* Most Recent section (up to 25 most recently read books displayed)
- New* Read Status (mark as read, in progress, unread) and page progress bar
- New* Sort and filter (by name, data, read status, file type)
- New* List modes - auto, list, and thumbnail; auto defaults to list mode for folders with more than 50 books

File Browser Improvements
- Folders and files are now merged into a single view
- Book item listing has been shrunk to fit better on mobile screens
General Improvements
- Continuious top to bottom progressive advance now works correctly
- Prev/Next book is now greyed out rather than showing the flyout message if at the start/end of the book list
Because this is a relatively large release, there must be issues that we didn't catch.
I will be updating the user guide to reflect the latest changes over the next month.
Please direct all issues to the forum first. Thank You!
Two page mode explained
Two page mode is one of the exciting new modes added in 1.2.0.0. We are handling its mechanics more intelligently compared to some other readers. The basic idea is: always try to fit two pages, otherwise don't (for example extra wide pages). We put a lot of effort making the visual asynchronous to ensure a smooth and responsive control to make everything look intuitive and natural.

One thing you'll notice is that two page always force fits full page. This is to ensure that two page mode is actually useful. Often if you use any other fit modes the page ends up being larger than the screen which defeats the purpose of two page mode. Secondly we force preload before and after buffer to 3 to ensure that when you do scroll back and forward it would minimize delay in loading in pages that wouldn't disrupt the reading experience.

We also introduced top to bottom two page mode. Some of the recent digital comics releases are in landscape rather than traditional portrait (i.e. Injustice). So if you like to read in portrait and still want the benefit of two page, just select top to bottom reading direction along with two page mode to get the top down two page effect.

Finally, zoom is fully supported in two page mode. You'll notice that as you zoom page order is adjusted in real-time to reflect whether the page should be combined or not. The page that do not fit after zoom are scroll smoothly out of view, and page scrolls back in if now deemed fitting.

Please let us know what you think of the two page mode and whether or not you like our implementation!

I'm hoping that the ETA for 1.2.0.0 will be around edit: when its ready . We might squeeze in a interim release before then but it is hard to say. This will be a big one with a rework of the display canvas that supports a 2-page mode with significant memory use reduction.

Features in include:
- Smart 2 page mode (auto adapts based on image sizes)
- Vertical scrolling mode
- Continuous vertical and horizontal reading mode mode (no snapping)
- Overall reduction in memory footprint, especially for large books
*- Dynamic PDF image scaling (resamples image on zoom)
*- Option to hide on-screen buttons
**- Option to disable auto downsize (or people who likes to load unusually large resolution images which may crash the app)

*added as of 1.1.2.0
**added as of 1.1.3.0

Things beyond:
- Improvements to file browser (search, filter, read status etc)
- Mobile build scaling (currently it's usable but everything is a bit too big if you dont decrease the dpi)

Update 5/11/2016:
We are in the final stages of finishing 2 page mode. Initially continuous and 2 page mode only only feature 1 direction scrolling (full page fit only), and no zoom. They will be added after release. But trust me, they are awesome.

We've added language localization and fixed some bugs!

- Comics++ now renamed to ComicsPlusPlus in Windows store so it can be properly indexed (apparently no one can find our app with the ++ messing with their search engine) but everything else remains as Comics++
- Full translation for Chinese simplified/traditional, and a new Chinese app name!
- Partial language support for Spanish, French, Russian, Japanese, Korean (some incomplete, help us translate!)
- Language options are accessible through the charm bar; manual restart is required if you select a non default language
- Fixed occasional crashing when swapping between books of different file types
- Fixed unable to resume book if app was closed while loading a file
